Restorative Justice/Circle Keeping

Circle training is a two day class that will teach you the history, principles, and roles of circle process and how to use circle process.

One of the ways we bring people together is through  Peacemaking Circle Process which is steeped in Native American and indigenous people practices throughout the world.  In essence a group of people sit in a circle and is guided by a circle keeper who creates a safe, non-hierarchical place where everyone has the opportunity to speak without interruption with the use of a talking piece. The circle upholds values such as:

  • respect
  • compassion
  • honesty
  • responsibility
  • accountability
  • diversity
  • equality
  • confidentiality

Because of the circle process many people find that the deep listening and ability to speak without interruption brings healing, understanding and transformation for everyone involved.

Participants will learn:

  • Restorative Justice history, philosophy and practices
  • Circle elements and stages
  • Role of a Circle Keeper
  • How to apply circle process

Some of the benefits are:

  • achieve greater understanding of people/issues
  • develop collaborative skills
  • resolve conflict
  • make decisions through consensus vs directives or majority rules
  • build relationships and community

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing (MI) and Coaching are a direct, non-confrontational, client-centered strategy aimed at increasing a person’s motivation to change. In other words it’s a conversation for strengthening a person’s own motivation and commitment to change. It is based on collaboration rather than confrontation, evocation rather than education, and autonomy instead of authority. It assumes that the person has the ability to change, has the answers within themselves, and emphasizes a person’s right to define their problems and choose their own solutions.

The purpose of MI/Coaching is to assist the person from ambivalence to making changes. Ambivalence is natural and normal to everyone who is contemplating change. It is defined as a conflict with desires, needs, reasons, and other motivations for changing behavior. It’s wanting and not wanting something at the same time.

In this one day training you will learn:

  • The spirit of motivational interviewing
  • Effective and ineffective motivators
  • Stages of change
  • Skills for motivating change
